Literature Text

“Kumar, you have been my friend since the day we were born and ever since that day you've been good to me and my kingdom. I here by decree, Kumar as my official adviser” King Edgar said to the people of his kingdom, they clapped and cheered for their king and now his new adviser. I scoffed at the announcement Father only wants him because he needs someone to look after me I picked up a rock near my boot, clenching it in my hand I prepare to throw it but I’m thrown to the ground. I jump to my feet and lunge at my attacker, it had been my older brother Diego what does this asshole want now I grab him by the shirt and throw him up against the wall. Even though Diego was the oldest, I was much taller and stronger than him.

“What the hell do you want, come to boast in my face some more” I snarl at him, Diego had been crowned heir to the throne. I had worked all my life for that crown and now the one who would kill his own mother for some money was made prince. I knew father was dying and needed an heir but I didn’t know he was so desperate for an heir that he would make that piece of shit prince. But of course I should have guessed that I would never be able to be king, I was but a low born. My parents had been killed when I was only 8 years old and the king took pity on a street rat and adopted me, his wife named me Alexander. Sadly the queen passed away only weeks after I had come to stay.

“Oh Alex, quit acting like a little girl. Your suppose to be the kings most trusted guard” Diego smirked.

“What?! What are you talking about”?! I let him go, taking a few steps back No, No! The older male walks around me keeping his glaring blue eyes on me.

“Father and I were talking about how the rebels were after father’s life, and well I told him you should be one of his guards. And you know once father is dead, you shall be my guard, and you’ll have to do everything I say” Diego hisses in my ear, his hand grips my shoulder. I shudder as he walks away damn it now I really want to throw the rock at fath- King Edgar, I turn to look if he was still giving his speech. He was gone; I sigh angrily and storm to the castle to meet this new adviser.

“Alex”! I’m tackled to the floor by Mira and Jane, Diego’s younger sister. I smirk at the two girls as they got off me, Mira hands me my mother’s necklaces; a triangle shaped necklace, with four small white pearls on each side.

I stared at the silver memory of my mother;  I clenched it in my fist Damn it  I could feel tears threatening to come out but I held it in with all my strength. Mother had given it to me the day before she died and that same day my real father came home with her in his arms, she was shot in the chest for arguing with some guards; after that father had become a wanted man for helping her. There's a hollow feeling in my chest that tightens as I remember the day father died in front of me, I vowed from day on that I would avenge my parents; but it seems like that was years ago and I still haven't kept my promise.

"Alexy, come pway with us"  Jane says in a spoiled voiced, Jane had recently turned five but she still acted like a 2 year old, probably because she felt like there was no reason to grow up. I pick up both girls in my arms and start walking toward their room, but then a shadow catches my eye What does he want now a growl rises through my throat as I spot the new adviser of the king standing by the girl's room, as if he knew I would go there. Putting the two young children down, I accompany them inside to play with them but Kumar whispers something in my ear as I pass causing me to snap around before entering the room.

"What the hell do you want" I say to the man's face, a smile appears on his face sending chills down my back What the hell?

"Votre mère avait raison, tu es vraiment un enfant têtu (your mother was right, you truly are a stubborn child)" Kumar says pushing me out the way as he walks down the great hall, he just left me there stunned at what he did. He had the guts to push me, now I really hated that guy. What did he say though?

Before the strange man leaves to the main hall he says something that angers me on the outside, but on the inside I was heart broken "Fire burns through everything even the strongest of homes, and sometimes you get trapped in it even by man".

*Flashback*

"Why is the floor dirty? Why hasn't Aunt cleaned it up"? It was reamed with heavy brown footprints, someone tracked in a lot of dirt from outside. Maybe Aunt went to visit her friend, it made sense.  I started walking in silence to the house but as I turn the corner the wind starts picking up, carrying with it faint cries and yells, my ten year old mind didn't understand yet that there was danger. As I turn the last curve, I face fire. The houses nestled into the trees before me were burning, the flames licked the horizon line obscuring it. The air is thick with smoke and mostly terror it was horrible. Almost every building within eyesight is alight, and those few that aren't, have had their windows smashed and their doors caved in. It is hellishly hot, almost too hot to breathe. Ice freezes me in place, my limbs were suddenly heavy as stone as I stare wildly at the destruction before me. A strangled groan gets caught in my throat as I want to cry out in bewilderment. The—the people are burning…! Terrified villagers, most of whom I couldn't properly recognize because their faces were covered in terror and some... some didn't even have faces. Screaming people, running in all directions. Except that some of them aren't running, some of them are lying in mangled heaps on the road or half-hanging out of broken doorways. The ground is drenched, I realized with another smothered moan it was drenched in blood. I let out whimpers, I want to cover my eyes to shield them from the gruesome nightmare, the death and screams; But I can't move my body was  to scared to move.

"No one else is leaving," I say faintly. The villagers were scrambling in every direction to escape death, but none of them were making it past the outer buildings. Only then do I notice that they aren't running aimlessly but some are chasing, and some are being chased. Through the smoke I see men in dirty uniforms, baring swords and roaring with laughter loud enough to rival that of the crackling inferno. I catch glimpse's of the men before they go on chasing people to their deaths, all that my eyes see is that of a red cross... Then the world goes black....

*End of Flashback*

~i~

I lung out of bed breathing heavily, drops of sweat fall on my hand More horrible memories. What Kumar said had burned its self into my mind, I just couldn't get what he said out of my mind. I sit there staring at my hands for a few minutes till I just lay down to sleep, before I fall into a deep sleep I mumble to myself "I won't be weak anymore mother, father. I will become stronger no matter what. For you both"

I'm trying to place the main character's nationality, as well as the setting... Having a little trouble doing so, but that might be because it's 1:15 a.m. here... :slamhead:

Interested to see where you go with this. Like I said, though, I'm a little thrown off by where this is supposed to take place.
